Memory Foam Mattress Study Reveals If You Need to Spend Big to Sleep Well by Nick Robinson

As the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

But does it hold true for memory foam mattresses? Must you spend a lot to get comfort and durability?

To find this answer, among others, I spent over 250 hours scouring through dozens of online forums, message boards, consumer websites, etc. collecting data from nearly 1,600 people on what they think of their mattresses. What my research shows is interesting.

Memory Foam Mattress Data
But first, in case you don't know, memory foam mattresses (also called visco elastic foam mattresses) use memory foam as the main supporting feature, as opposed to innersprings, air or water. It is referred to as "memory" foam because when you get up, the foam goes back to its original flat surface.

Three memory foam mattress brands were included in my research and analysis: Tempur-pedic, Novaform and Bergad / Isoform. There are, of course, other brands of memory foam beds than these. However, these other brands were not included in my research analysis because they did not meet my research standards.

In terms of price, Tempurpedic is the most expensive, followed by Bergad / Isoform and Novaform, respectively.

Comfort
The research shows, however, that in terms of comfort, Tempurpedic scored significantly below Bergad / Isoform and Novaform, the two less expensive brands.

Specifically, 91% of Isoform / Bergad owners indicated that their bed was comfortable. 80% of Novaform owners indicated that their bed was comfortable, and 68% of Tempur-pedic owners said that their bed was comfortable.

So much for having to pay more to get comfort.

Durability
But what about the durability and longevity of the mattresses? You may be thinking that the less expensive memory foam mattress brands will be beaten by Tempur-pedic in this area. Not so.

In regard to durability, at least 10% of both Tempur-pedic and Novaform bed owners, according to the data, reported premature sagging of the bed. (Premature sagging is defined as sagging that notably reduces comfort and takes place within three years after purchase.) And only 1-2% of Bergad / Isoform mattress owners reported premature sagging.

So What's the Bottom Line?
You don't need to spend big money on a memory foam mattress to get good-to-excellent comfort and durability, according to my research.
